Hey, it's Arnold or Ahnowd, depending on what country you're from. I've rendered Arnold a few times for t-shirt designs, caricatures and cards, but I've never painted him full color. The attached image represents 1/4 of the nearly finished piece, which I hope to share soon.

It's taken the better part of a year to regain my creative senses and get back to the drawing board. While I had some seriously dark clouds looming over my head in 2011, I'm happy to say they seem to have passed and I'm now enjoying being back in my studio in a creative environment.

Today's attachments are a few pieces from my sketchbook. The finished versions of these comps will pop up on my website, and I'll make notice when they do.

Some will remain sketches though, so, keep that in mind. :P

You know--all I needed to do to be reminded of how far behind I am was to go look at my website. What a mess, and how am I representing myself? Oh, with thousand year old Stanleyart! I swear, some of the pieces on my site were uncovered in an archological dig. You can find my stuff on the cave walls that the National Geographic guys are swearing was drawn by cavemen, but were in fact drawn by me. My junk is that old!
Let me shield my eyes. Quick! Someone throw a few punches so my orbs can swell shut like Stallones did in Rocky 1-6.

Ugh! What am I doing to myself?

For the last, I dunno, 100 years of my life, I've sabotaged every movement I make in terms of building my career. How do I do this? By doing NOTHING. Live fat and sassy for a while on savings or royalties or just by being lazy and apathetic and dining @ every buffet that won't refuse someone who has tried desparately in the past to mishape his body by over-indulgence and become a human watermelon the size of Lake Michigan!

Now I rant no more. It's time to be real busy, and I'm really, really about to be. My new long-term goals are established and set, my new time-lordship papers came in a few weeks ago, annnnd I've got my pencils, pens, and airbrush filled with acrylics ready to go.

This cretin has his motivation back. Suffer a little while and you'll either accept your conditions, or you'll do every darn thing it takes to make change happen, both physical and professional.

Wait. Just wait.

With Christmas Day quickly approaching, I just wanted to say "Merry Christmas" to those who occassionally pop-in here to see what I'm doing. While I can't wait to put 2010 behind me, due to the trials of life and the numerous brick walls I've smacked hard against over the year, my brand new goals are to invest within; with family and my own personal projects, ie, going back to the drawing board and re-creating the Stanleyart Brand.

No one may get it, or buy it, but I'm just too stubborn to quit trying.

Here's the graying addition to my Empire Strikes Back sketch cards contributions. I'm amazed by the time I was willing to give to these little suckers while other freelance jobs have been banging on my drawing board screaming for my attention, with greater provision being offered. Stupid is as stupid does. I have this bad habit of overcommitting, then retreating into the tunnel until a job is complete.
It's an ADD thing, it has to be.
The question is--will I do any more sketch card jobs outside of commission work?
Probably not.

Right before Christmas, I emailed Cat Staggs about connecting with the Topps editor affiliated with Star Wars Sketch Cards. As design would have it, I was able to make contact, thank you, Cat, and acquire my first Topps/Sketch card gig. The job is now complete, 106 grayscale marker rendered cards in 14 very short (long) days. Overall I was rushed, and most of the card reflect it, but the exercise was very positive. Since completing the job I feel re-energized to get back to some long dormant projects and completing them. But most of all, I look forward to working @ my craft diligently in 2010. Richard Petty is the first memory I have of Nascar, circa 1970. Being 6 years old at the time, I really knew nothing of the sport except that I liked the pretty cars with painted numbers and scripted names. But I've always associated Nascar with Richard Petty, and driving really fast in a winged Plymouth Superbird. So here I am paying homage. One day I hope to get to meet the "king of racing".

Burt Silverman offers insightful words in the first video, regarding shapes and values. His pencil work is nice here, but it's really difficult to appreciate due to the bad quality of the video. Instructional? Yes. Worth the viewing.

The second video, is much easier to see the color painted shapes coming to life. Again, worthy data here.

I stumbled upon Bruno Lucches sculpting demos on YouTube and became rather moist. I love his carefree, almost conductor hand and arm movements when he is applying clay to his sculptures. It's amazing to watch the transformation and you can see him searching for a likeness strike. The chicken wire as a hand-held tool is something I've never even considered to use outside of building a volcano.

Anyway, his material is worth the watch. I recommend it.

Mars Attacks Gene Simmons!

I'm waiting for granny to yell out, "They killed Congress!"

Had an urge to draw one of the big brained "Nyah Nyah!" Martians from Mars Attacks.

Somehow Gene Simmons made it into the deck too. I guess I'll eventually add Peter Criss, Ace Frehley & Star-Child namesake Paul Stanley into the sketchcard pile.

My list of finished cards continues to grow and obscure faces seem to be more common as I scrounge for reference. I found a shot of Charles Dickens and an authentic(?)Henri Toulouse Lautrec photograph taken from the late 1800's that should make for some interesting pieces of tiny art. This sketchcard exercise has encouraged the need to look for different models and I really have enjoyed the time spent on rendering them thus far.

Of course recognizable mugs like; Al Bundy, Oliver Wendall Douglas & Austin Powers are completed renderings and they will have supporting cast members joining them before I hit my magic number of 365.

Color illustrations are comfortably being worked on by day and these fun little cards by night-- when the trailer park is quiet. Peace in the valley. Stay tuned

I wish I had of given myself the assignment of doodling tiny 2.5 x 3.5 inch images long ago. This has been plain and simple fun.

I got an itch the other day. The itch was to take my new set of Copic cool gray markers, (God bless you, Adam P. Hughes) and sit firmly at my drawing table, which is FAR AWAY from the crack-box I call a computer, and marker render 365 individual sketch-cards. And why? Why not. Around midnight, when it's quiet in Stanley Manor (aka, the Trailer) I can enjoy a hour or two for myself, each night, and get a little re-fresher in self-discipline.

Commit to abnormalcy. S'good.

Oh--about 300 to go.

Ironman--new illustration Part Deux

Ironman with traditional colors, part 2. Am I crazy for not wanting to go digital? (This is a one room insane asylum so, let me be. :)) Currently I am nitpicking the art and will have it up to show in it's completeness...soon. 'Scuze my A.D.D. but there's just too much going on right now and much seems to be vying for my attention.

Anyway, here's a quarter piece of Ironman.

(Is it just me or do uploaded images to Blogger seem to really fade out? My original jpeg has quite a bit more color intensity to it than what is seen here. Not that lame excuses will benefit my work, but I need every little bit of sum'un sum'un I can get to appear to look better. Help meeee!)

A Christmas Carol

Chuck Jones art directed this animated short, "A Christmas Carol" back in 1971. My brother and I watched this very special piece during that time as kids, and about 6 months later the lithium shooters finally kicked in and relieved us of the rather haunting and impressionable images. (No kidding, we were warped for a long time! lol! )

Granted, this piece is aged and is nothing compared to the trauma kids see on tv today, but still this is a fabulous piece of storytelling in the best of artistic sense. Take note of the voiceover talent, and the heavily rendered backgrounds.

The two drawbacks? It's way too short (less than 30 minutes) and the screen is small and is hard to see all of the wonderful background pencil work.

However, it's still worth the watch ( here ) and read the making here.

When I realize it's been--years--since I did a Stanleyart.com website update, I cringe. When I see the pages of really old artwork still posted on the site, it's then I realize that I should move my house over to Apathy Boulevard, on the corner of Yawn and Snore...gah.

But like our $700 Billion dollars worth of new taxes, (or in my case, new artwork)--it's coming.

Fortunately, incoming jobs aside, the site is being reworked.
