Dana Rinehart--My longtime friend has passed away.

Dana Rinehart-- my long time friend of 25 years from Knoxville, Tennessee, has passed away after a brief bout with cancer.

I text him on Saturday mid-afternoon, January 19th, to get an update after having spent the week thinking about him, only to receive a totally unexpected response from his wife regrettably letting me know he had passed earlier that morning. I was in complete shock-- without a breath to breathe. The response I'd expected was "My new treatment has started and is going well", or "I'm on the couch watching Frazier, these guys are hysterical!"

I am heavy-hearted, it's tough to take a deep breath and not think about him-- the news of his passing is beyond acceptance.

During our 25 years worth of adventures, Dana was once my boss, a co-artist with me on many projects, my screen printer, my car-tower, my carpet stretcher, my comic-convention cohort, my robot-building side-kick, the spontaneous adventurer on too many outings to list, a zany nut & a match for my off-brand humor, a man I would laugh with for hours if not days, and most of all, the loyalist of friend. He was a chronically happy man who had a contagious joy-filled laugh, he was positive always, and was just a truly warm-hearted guy. As I look at his picture, this is the way he was all the time. My friend was authentic, amazingly consistent and was genuinely loved by I think everyone who knew him.

Dana was prepared for every occasion. Just like the Boy Scout motto says, ''he was always prepared''. Listening to him as we talked on the phone for the last time and reading his final texts was comforting to me as I know he was even prepared for the final days. His heart belonged to Christ and he maturely spoke of his faith-- he was living in peace. And while he didn't like the condition he was in, nor the suffering of cancer and back pain, he was at peace and he trusted God for what had been placed on him. What an amazing witness.

I will carry my memories of Dana with me for the rest of my life, and I'll think of him with joy, respect, brotherly love, and great fondness always. He was a rare friend--the best you could have for a friend.

Thank you for reading.

Muhammad Ali or Babe Ruth--Who's the heavy hitter here?

Who can hit harder? Muhammad Ali or Babe Ruth? Well, Ruth is deceased, so I'll go with Ali.

But marker my work, both are sports legends no one can dispute! So there. :)

In a Galaxy, rather far away...

Star Wars ACEO 2-card art. 2.5" x 7".
When Star Wars first hit the movie theaters back a million years ago, my brother and I must have been the only two kids in the entire US to have missed the movie and even more astonishing, we missed even the tv advertisements. Strange, we were connoisseurs of every (Sci-Fi) tv show and movie during the late 70s and 80s, but somehow we managed to miss out on all the Wookies and Ewoks hype.

Today I'm more up to date with the ex-LucasFilm entity, and have found that even at a later point in life I can enjoy drawing the characters. Admittedly though, SW isn't what Star Trek is to me, but I can still savor drawing each widget of a DeathStar or Millennium Falcon. I blame the later interest of Star Wars on the little kid in me who remains fascinated by all things colorful, animated and dripping in creative juices.

Yeah, it's fun.

So May the Schwartz Be Wit You--whatta world, whatta world....! (Wait! Wrong franchise!)

Be sure and review them if you're in the market for custom sketch cards.

Meanwhile, you guys buy the painted cards from me. :)

Sergio Oliva--Bodybuilder--Biggie Size!

Here's one of my crude comprehensives for a poster idea, based on the bodybuilder, Sergio Oliva. He was nicknamed "The Myth", due to his unbelievable size & muscularity. Little known fact is Oliva beat (7x Mr. Olympian) Arnold Schwarzenegger for the Mr. Olympia title back in 1969.

How weird Stern and Jerry Aldo Riveera

On a flight home from an out-of-state gig, I carried on with me my sketchbook to do a little mindless drawing. For some reason I left my drawing pencils and pens inside my luggage. Duh! Luckily I found a pen and also a National Enquirer stuffed inside the seat-netting in front of me. Apparently someone worked a crossword puzzle and blackened the teeth of a smiling celebrity. (OH wait, that was me.)  Inside the rag were two fancy faces that stuck out like a sore thumb. Oh joy oh bliss--Geraldo Rivera and Howard Stern.

Entertaining or complaining, both guys at some point ate the foot of a chair during their careers and left us amazed at why the cameras would continue rolling. Sensational Springer-vision! That's why! Our interests and limbic systems forever tainted.

My catharsis, and much needed, developed these hastily drawn caricatures of both media-hookers, with viper-like ties and Medusa-like hairdews. Geraldo sports a small nose bandage, and Stern sports his original nose and chin.

Of course Batman just appeared out of nowhere, cuz, well--HE'S BATMAN.
